Twigs Nursery is a small tree nursery in Ottawa, dedicated to growing native species of trees and shrubs from locally collected seed. Seedlings and saplings are sold in one-gallon to three-gallon nursery containers. The growing field is located on a quarter-acre plot on the Just Food Farm, a large property owned by the National Capital Commission and part of Ottawa's Greenbelt.
Opening Victoria Day weekend: May 21, 2016
Our seedlings and saplings will also be available for sale at Green Thumb Garden Centre (17 Tristan Court, Nepean) on the Victoria Day weekend.
Twigs under new Ownership!
Stefan Cherry is the new owner of Twigs Nursery. Please read about Stefan's story on the "About" page...
Some of the highlights of the 2015 growing season are Ohio buckeye, burr oaks from the Champlain oaks, Redbud, and Northern Catalpa! These are being started from seed, so will only be available for sale in 2017. The Champlain Oaks are a group of indigenous trees documented as pre-existing European settlement, and representing a valuable proven genetic source for seed. See http://www.champlainoaks.com/
Twigs Nursery is Certified Organic!
In the Fall of 2014, Twigs Nursery and the other start-up farms at the Just Food Farm were certified organic by EcoCert. Achieving organic certification in Ontario is a rigorous process that demands compliance with strict regulations and meticulous documentation of every aspect of the growing operation. Congratulations to all of the farmers, running individual start-up farming businesses who worked hard for this.
